RESEARCH SCHOOL – Expressions of Mathematical Activity: Traces and Histories
Prof. Dr. Andrea Bréard and Dr. Catherine Goldstein (CNRS,IMJ-PRG, UMR 7586) will give a workshop on “Comparing traces: combinations in nineteenth-century China and France” in a module on “Inscribing and disciplining combinations” at the RESEARCH SCHOOL – Expressions of Mathematical Activity: Traces and Histories. It takes place from 27 – 31 March, 2023 at the CIRM in Marseille, France and is open to graduate students and researchers alike.
Their workshop aims to compare combinatorial works belonging to cultures that are a priori different, but more or less contemporary, in this case those coming from the combinatorial practices of Li Shanlan (1867) and Henri Delannoy (c. 1885). Both works have been recovered, via symbolic re-transcriptions, in the current international combinatorics. But the original practices of their authors were partly based on the visual role of number arrangements, triangles and chessboards of different shapes. During the workshop we will discuss how to compare such texts and practices, in particular to what extent it is relevant and possible to do so without transcribing them into a later common writing.
About the venue: Under the supervision of the French Mathematical Society, CNRS, Aix-Marseille University, with the solid support of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, LabEx Carmin and Archimede Institute, CIRM has been, for more than 40 years, a tool of excellence at the service of the French school of mathematics and researchers from all over the world. With more than 4500 participants each year, it is one of the world’s leading meeting centers in mathematics. Its International Scientific Council ensures the quality of the meetings organized and selects the beneficiaries of the Jean Morlet Chair semesters. The high scientific level and the high quality of the services provided by the Cirm make it internationally attractive and influential.
